I am Marien Joy P. Letran a fourth year student of Bachelor of Science in Social Work. I am enrolled in the subject of Field Instruction 2 (SW22n) wherein I am assigned in Bulucaon, Pigcawayan, Cotabato. We are required to live in the community for two months or more as long as we can finish the 600 hours, and we need to organize core group and sectorial groups such as children, women, youths and other community sectors.

During the Last week of July, the Student Field Workers started to enter in the Community of Bulucaon, Pigcawayan, Cotabato for the transect walk, and by the first week of August SFW did the Family base lining with the community people specifically on Purok Rose. Since we already have the initial contact with the community people we continue to have home visitations with them.

We conducted the first meeting with the community people last August 11, 2018 to introduce them the purpose why we were there. Then starting that time we have upcoming meetings that was conducted during Saturdays. We have the meeting explaining for Development Process (Base-lining, Visioning, Prioritization, Planning, Tapping, Implementation, monitoring, and Re-planning) for them to have direction. SFW facilitated the creation of the core group’s mission and vision, also the election of officers.

With the Student Field Instructor Last September 8, 2018 the SFW facilitated the core group to set committees to delegate the task; these committees are environment, education, economics and livelihood. During the prioritization phase, the core group voted the environment as an issue that needed to prioritize first regarding to the improper wastes disposal. The group decided to make a garbage bin out of sacks and put it in the front of Prado Elementary School.

The core agreed to have the implementation plan last September 22, 2018. During that time, they contributed materials like bamboos, sacks, nails, two by two planks, saw and other needed materials. At the end of the day they built one garbage bin and putted it in the front of the elementary school. When the Barangay Captain saw the output he affirmed their efforts and committed to provide round bars for the solid garbage bin. The SFWs and core group members were happy knowing that the Barangay captain saw their efforts and supports them. During the first week of October the first round bar garbage bin was already finished, followed by two more garbage bin last November 6, 2018 that was welding by the core group members. These will be put to the outpost area, front of the Barangay hall and side of the irrigation area.

In the sectorial part I was assigned in the youth sector. Last October 24, 2018 I conducted the bottle recycling and Christmas tree making out of used newspapers or coupon bond the same. All of these trainings were supported by the Barangay Captain that was held at the Barangay Hall area.

After the trainings, we as a student field workers continued to build relationship with the people, when there were celebrations like Birthdays and fiesta the community people invited us and celebrates with us. The experience of being a Student field worker assigned in Bulucaon gives us the chance to love the community people and community life, these also enhances our skills and talents in community organizing. Saying goodbye to the community people is one of the challenges the SFWs must face, as it is said that no emotional involvement but as a SFW who truly cherish that experiences the memories with them is one of a kind that is worth remembering. As Galatians 6:9 says “Let us not become weary in doing god, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”, I thank the Lord for this opportunity every time I am with them. I also thank you Scranton Women’s Leadership Organization for supporting me until this far. Glory to God to Your ministry. Your work is not in vain.
