The Scranton Scholarship in Korea offers two programs: the SWLC-Ewha Scholarship and the Ph.D. in Theology Scholarship. The SWLC-Ewha Scholarship is open to female applicants planning to apply to master’s or doctoral programs at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. The Ph.D. in Theology Scholarship is available to female applicants planning to apply to doctoral programs at theological seminaries in the metropolitan area of South Korea. Depending on eligibility, the scholarship is awarded annually and covers tuition and living expenses in Korea.

Eligibility

SWLC-Ewha Scholarship Eligibility:

Female students from SWLC partner institutions in Asia planning to apply to Ewha Womans University’s master’s or doctoral programs are eligible to apply for this scholarship. In addition, Christian women from developing Asian countries with a GDP per capita under USD 5,000 who are currently residing in Korea are also eligible to apply; in such cases, the scholarship covers tuition only.

For master’s programs, eligibility is primarily limited to Scranton Scholars who have previously received the Scranton Scholarship; however, applicants recommended through SWLC partner institutions may also be considered. For doctoral programs at Ewha, eligibility is open to all applicants, with priority given to female faculty members who do not yet hold a doctoral degree.

Applicants may apply regardless of their major, provided they enroll in a general graduate school. Programs offered by professional graduate schools—such as law, medicine, business, or international studies—are not eligible. Priority is given to Christian students.

For detailed information about the admission process at Ewha Womans University, please refer to this link and contact the university directly: http://isa.ewha.ac.kr/oisa/1442/subview.do

The scholarship selection timeline will be announced on this page once Ewha releases its admissions schedule.

Ph.D. in Theology Scholarship Eligibility:

Female applicants from SWLC partner institutions in Asia, or those recommended through SWLC partner institutions, who are planning to apply to doctoral programs at theological seminaries in the metropolitan area of South Korea are eligible. Applicants should review each seminary’s admission guidelines and prepare documents accordingly. To apply for the scholarship, please contact: scholarship@scrantoncenter.org

Scholarship Coverage

  • This scholarship covers full tuition and provides approximately 1 million KRW per month for living expenses per person annually.
  • The eligibility for receiving the scholarship will be renewed on a yearly basis through an end-of-year evaluation.
  • The scholarship can be awarded for up to 4 semesters for master's programs and up to 8 semesters for doctoral programs.

How to Apply

To apply for the SWLC Scholarship in Korea, applicants are required to submit the following attached documents. SWLC will review the application documents and conduct online interviews:

  • Application Form including a personal statement, photo, and an academic plan
  • Official Transcripts from the home university (bachelor's and/or master's)
  • 3 Recommendations: 1) an academic advisor, professor, or department head, 2) a religious leader, and 3) a social or community organization leader
For professor applicants, a letter of recommendation from the home university president is also required.
  • Language Proficiency: Applicants are required to submit the following language proficiency score.
    - TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) Level 4 or above
    - Applicants for the Ph.D. in Theology Scholarship are required to submit a TOPIK Level 2 score or higher or must provide a Level 2 score within one year of enrollment at the university in Korea. Failure to submit the required score within this period will result in disqualification from the scholarship and ineligibility for renewal.
  • Pledge: commitment and participation in volunteer activities, SWLC programs, meetings, etc.
SWLC will support Scranton Scholars in cultivating leadership by maintaining a close relationship with them during their stay in Korea.
